Brutus Flashback

This car came with the name – Brutus. With a 350 V-8 Turbo-Fire Hydra-matic, it was a fun cruiser for the mean streets of Tewksbury back in 1985. One of my first memories driving this 71 Monte Carlo was cruising down Chandler Street on a beautiful New England summer day. Windows down, tunes cranked, I had The Firm on cassette playing Radioactive. I’m sure I was doing 40+ in a 30 grinning as the exhaust rumbled away. There’s the siren, nice. Nobody liked being pulled over by the notorious Officer Stevens. My heart skipping, and the sweat starting, he slowly inspected the paperwork, then the vehicle, then the paperwork again. He handed the papers back and sternly leaned in. “Have Dad remove the glass packs from the mufflers, and you slow down.” I exhaled as he turned and walked away. A warning?! I happily took my souvenir from Officer Stevens and headed home.

What a ride!

Chuck’s 68 Charger is sold and being packed up and shipped to Michigan, and I am sad to see it go. The car came with a story of Chuck and Katy celebrating 50+ years of marriage buying a very similar car as what they20161202_124508_30570835853_o were cruising around in back when they were first dating. Chuck bought the original charger in 68 during his senior year at West Point. He and Katy drove it for several years until they had a son, and concerns about driving a 4-speed with their kid in the car overtook their common sense (car seat? LOL!). Well, that and the lack of air conditioning while img_20161201_073926_31354867585_othey cruised around Alabama.

Flash forward several decades, and Chuck found a highly suitable replacement. The first time I 20161112_182550_30858024491_osaw it, I was shocked at how clean this car was, how pretty the paint was, and how this Charger looked fast, even though it was standing still! Not for nothing, it must have been super clean to begin with, but the restoration was impeccable and stored inside of Tupperware or something. In the documentation set I saw this was restored way back in 1990, yet it looked like it just rolled out of the shop.

20161202_090839_30553791444_oIn between a few tweaks by Dave, Chuck was able to cruise around in one of the sweetest 68 Charger RT tributes around. Last year we met up with Chuck in his ride off of Via De Ventura, and with a big ear to ear grin on his face he raced away after a Dodge fan complimented his awesome car. I’m a sucker for an ear to ear grin on a happy driver! Thanks for sharing your stories and your sweet 68 Charger Chuck!

Today’s To-do List: Everything!










What a difference a year makes…  Last year it was one huge looming deadline for Adrianne & JJ Hardy’s 65 F100, this year its’ eight deadlines!

Highlights include the dash install on Chuck’s super clean 68 Charger, new brake lines on Marion’s fun 51 Ford truck, finish up the wiring and fuel system on Tim’s bad ass 37 Chevy business coupe, and the list goes on and on. Good problems to have, but we’ll need all hands on deck to do it all! Here’s to a fast-finishing fall!

2015 An Arizona Native

Frame-off Superstition Specialty Cars resto-mod for this 1965 Ford F100 for Arizona Native and Orioles Shortstop J.J. Hardy! His wife Adrianne didn’t know it, but it would be a very fine birthday for her! Complete with an engine and transmission upgrade and lots of personal custom touches. Ski and the boys ripped it down, Dave’s eye for design and detail, David’s expert project lead and fabrication skills, and Al’s mean body skills make for a delicious truck rebuild for the team.

For me, this resto-mod project was special because of the family history of the truck. It is so cool that multiple generations learned to drive this old farm truck around Arizona, and even cooler that it is now better than new for the next generation!

JJ and Adrianne Hardy’s 65 F100

All Business!

Tim likes cars. I like Tim’s cars. I like it even more when Tim’s cars are in our shop! This go around is a 1937 Chevy Business Coupe in dark sage with a Damn Good Motor in it. The Engine was built by Guy Henson owner of Damn Good Motors in Minnesota, and this pretty coupe has a 1952 302 out of a military tank, bored to 327 with a centrifugal super charger and custom fuel injection (can you spell torque?). Dave calls Guy a mad machinist! This Coupe also hosts a T56 magnum transmission and Fatman Fabrication chassis. Dad is smoothing out some body work, and Dave is working to complete the wiring and component install, and a custom interior installation is on tap for this 37 Coupe that means All Business! Down to the Nitty-Gritty…

With only a few days left to the big reveal, the final touches on this Ford F100 have to go smoothly!

727e0c1cca5bef3ca6264765c62a0f00After sitting quietly in a field for some years, the truck was dropped off in April of 2014, deloused (there was definitely ‘something’ pretty big living in it!!!), then slowly and methodically 22024143214_f7b09bc8aa_otorn down and all the pieces labeled, sorted, and stored. This was to be a surprise birthday gift for Adrienne, and rumor has it that she was mad as heck when the truck mysteriously disappeared. She had learned to drive in that truck.

After many, many hours of media blasting, restoration, powder coating, painting, the truck slowly over this summer became a truck again, only now its new and improved! The old 223 6 cylinder had a cracked block, so a replacement 351 Windsor was installed, ‘three on the tree’ is now AOD, and the 410 rear axle is now a 355. An upgrade of Classic Auto Air Conditioning will help keep this a year round driver in Arizona. The upgraded power plant is looking sharp under the hood with it’s gold valve covers, the seat came in this week, and I absolutely love the blue and black plaid suede material. The colors just simply pop.

22935628442_fe38f3a909_oDave assigned me the task of label application, and I carefully applied FORD lettering in the hub caps and  applied the dedication to the glove box cover. Dad clear coated the glove box, but it looks like we accidentally skipped a generation, so we will make up a new dedication for the glove box that includes 4 generations of Acton’s that have driven this truck! I need to do some more research, but I believe this truck is an “Arizona Native”.  It looks like it is an Acton rite of passage to learn how to drive in this truck. The ‘Dave’s’ have been very busy with all the finish details over the past few weeks and I’m sure the dedication is going to be a big hit this week. We will post more pics after the big reveal!
